What is the legal basis for the introduction of digital tachographs?
Digital tachographs will be introduced based on Regulation (EC) No. 2135/98 which amended Regulation (EEC) No. 3821/85. The technical specification for the systems is described in Annex 1B of VO. (EWG) No. 3821/85 at last changed by VO (EU) No. 1266/2009.
Since when will new commercial vehicles be fitted with digital tachographs (DTCO)?
Based on the EU regulations from May 2006 new commercial vehicles in EU member states for which tachographs are mandatory have to be fitted with digital tachographs.
Will it be necessary to convert this EU legislation into national legislation?
The relevant authorities in EU member states are not required to draw up appropriate regulations concerning but in particular the establishment of the infrastructure associated with digital tachographs. Examples include the arrangements for issuing cards, the scope of tests, workshop authorisation and the organisation of roadside and on-site checks.
What rules apply in the AETR states?
Since June 2010 digital tachographs are also mandatory for new vehicles also in the Non-EU-AETR-States for cross border traffice.
